I spent this past weekend at the University of Waterloo lecturing for a practice management course.  There were many questions about staffing.  Below is content, taken from the lecture, to consider.  Staff management is one of the more difficult areas of being the CEO of an optometry practice.

Morale Symptoms
  1. Staff burnout: low morale, no laughter, few smiles. If you’re
walking around the office and not hearing laughter you’re doing something wrong because people aren’t having fun.
  2. High turnover of staff with negative exit interviews

Office Process Symptoms

  1. Staff falling behind in their everyday tasks like billing, recall, insurance verification
  2. Accounts receivable are increasing
  3. The doctor is doing any task that someone else with less training is   able to do
  4. Hard to get coverage for staff vacations
